Welcome Back! Over the past few weeks, students and teachers have been focused on what it means to be a successful learner in our dynamic school community. Take a walk through our hallways and you will see children practicing what it looks like to be respectful, responsible, and ready to learn at all times. Teachers will often have their students develop these traits by incorporating games, songs, and other teambuilding activities into the daily routine. In 5th grade, for example, we had the opportunity to witness the students rotating from class to class as they worked in teams to build the tallest tower out of marshmallows and pasta! How engaging! They also learned to cooperate with one another by playing a complex card game, which tested their skills and pushed them to work together as a team. These positive experiences during the first six weeks of school pave way for successful learning opportunities to arise later down the road. We are also very excited about our World Languages program. Our students have the opportunity to explore learning in meaningful ways so that they are able to develop the 21st century learning skills that will allow them to be successful in the future. In addition to our Maker and Project Based Learning work, we challenge students to learn in a second language. There are myriad cognitive benefits to learning how to read, write, and think in more than one language, and research shows that bilingual students outperform their monolingual peers on a variety of educational assessments. We’re thrilled that our students will further immerse themselves in a language-rich environment. This is the first year that approximately 120 students in Kindergarten, 1st grade and 2nd grade are participating in our dual language two-way immersion program. We are thrilled that our parents and community members have shown an overwhelming amount of support for this program. Classes in this program are intentionally designed so that half the students are native English speakers and half are native Spanish speakers. Students spend half their day learning in English and the other half in Spanish. All other Kindergarten, 1st grade, and 2nd grade students who are not participating in the dual language immersion program receive 120 minutes of Spanish per week through our FLES model. This model has shown a lot of success over the past three years. Please follow us on twitter @CaleElementary to find out more about what our students are learning throughout the year. You will see photos of children engaged in their learning and having fun with various projects. Your support is greatly appreciated, and we look forward to seeing you at our school wide events this year! | Bienvenidos! |
